MODERN PEDESTRIANISM. 67 On the 11thof February1812, Mr.Webber undertook, for a bet of one hundred guinea^, to ride ninemiles withinhalf anhour, and to runfivemiles in another half hour. He start­ ed at Two-mileBrook,nearColnbrook,Bucks, and performedthe nine miles in a light sulky, in four minutesless thanthe given time. He nowstartedon his pedestrianmatch, andwent fourmiles in a few seconds less than twenty- fourminutes, labouring undergreat distress; buthe recovered his wind,andwonthe match in six secondswithin the time. Mr.Frowardof Berkeley-street,on the 14th of April 1812,performed thirtymiles in three hoursand fifty-three minutes, for a Wager of twentyguineas. CHAP.
