This gentlemanstands only five feet four inches, and is of thick stature. On the 21st of July 1777, Joseph Headley of Riccal nearYork,rantwo mileson Knaves- mire, in nine minutesand forty-fiveseconds, fora wagerof one hundredguineas. About a month before, he ran four miles over the sameground in twenty-oneminutes. He was allowedto be the swiftestrunner at that time in the kingdom. Joseph Beal of Welburn Moor-houses, near Castle Howard, Yorkshire, ran two miles in nine minutes and forty-eight seconds, on the K 2 York
