My grandfather was a medical man of some importance in the island. Previous, however, to his taking up the study of medicine, he. had held a commission as ensign in the 3rd York Regiment. My maternal grandfather was a colonel in the militia, and, among other appointments, held that of Governor of the Penitentiary atKingston. At the time of my birth, my father heldthe office of superintendent of police. In the November of 1875, 1being then exactly one year and ten months' old, my mother was compelled to take up her residence in this country. In 1880, she finally went to Edinburgh, where, with the exception of a year or so, she has resided ever since. B -1
