Running Recollections and How to Train
101 He is terribly enthusiastic, and if he takes a fancy tothe man he is training, he will work like a nigger toget him fit. Bill Bottomley trained me for the Newcastle Sweep of 1899, for my matches againstHarper andBrediu at 470, and also for the exhibitionrace at Cardiff, where I ran350 yards in 36 1-5 sec., one of my best performance?. " Bill" is a most conscientious trainer, the very man to bring out a novice. He is very quick to discover a man's weaknesses, and is about the best judge of character I know. It seems ratherstrange that the man who trained Bradley for so many of his race?!with me should eventually become the trainer ofhis antagonist. Other men who have looked after me in training are Bill Harvey, who helped me to get fit for my match with Bredin at 400, also for the Newcastle Sweepof 1897, which I won ; "Shirt" Cook, who looked after me for a few weeks when I was an amateur; and Kinnear, of Newcastle, who was with me when I ran Keane 200 yards, and Brediu 500 for the second time.
