Running Recollections and How to Train

119 This may appear a somewhat severe mode, but I do unhesitatingly assert that he who would succeed as a long distance runner will have to carefully train on these lines. Having endeavoured to give a general outline to be adopted, it now rests with the man himself, and with his trainer, to add to or deduct any particulars that may not apply to the especial features inhis case. Tt is now, therefore, onlyleft forme to briefly summarize a daily programme as follows Rise at six o'clock in summer and seven o'clock in winter; cold sponge down ; steady walk ; 8.30, breakfast ; easy till 9.45 ; walk till 11 o'clock ; run about three miles; dinner, 12.45 ; bed, 1.45; out for walk at three o'clock; track at four; three miles spin with sharp finish, shower and rub down ; tea, 5.30 ; walk, 6.30 to 8.30 ; quiet chat, read, or game of some sort ;and bed at ten o'clock. Never forget grooming on rising from bed at any time, and take sponge and shower baths cold.
