Running Recollections and How to Train

CHAPTER IX. AMATEUR AND PROFESSIONAL TRAINING CONTRASTED. 1 HAVE often been asked to describe how it was that 1 came to show such a vast improvement in my form after 1 turned professional. The reason is very simple. When 1 train for a race now, I am not galloping all over the country, running all sorts of distances. Instead, I remain quietly in my quarters, never throwing a chance away. 1 do not mean to say that I never run in any handicaps during apreparation, but I take good care that when I do I come to no harm thereby. A glance at the following table, duringthe time I resided in London, will give you an idea of the amount of travelling I did, and the races I used to run in my amateur-professional days : Distance fiom Date Place.
