Running Recollections and How to Train

report of the pistol, or whatever the signal may be, but is generally running some five yards (this is no exaggeration) when the signal is given. It isquite acommon occurrence, I am sorry to say, for a man to shitt his peg up some 20 or 30 yards, even in a quarter-mile race, and stand there looking as meek as possible when the marksman comes to see if he is on his proper mark. I once sawa man, after he had been placed on his mark, go to the railings, apparently to speak to a friend, creepunder and come on to the track some yards further up. T went on tour round a few of these meetings with Billy Cross, and Cross, by the way, was one of the most versatile pedestrians that ever ran. From 100yards to 20 miles this talented gentleman was never disgraced in any company. He was also no small beer over timber, and many a hurdle race he placed to his credit at some of themeetings 1 have described.
