Mills never gained an inch on me the whole way, and I eventually won by five or six yards, doingone yard outside evens all the way, or two yards inside (14-4-5), from my mark. My share of the gate-money amounted to nearly £70 uponthat occasion,and altogether I netted about£100 by the whole transaction. The slowness of the time, comparatively speaking, is accounted for by the fact that we ran iip Higginshaw and against a slight bi'eeze. Shortly after this match, I issued a challenge to run any man in England, bar Harper, with one yard start in 150 yards. No takers appeared, however, and I had to wait for a match until Cross offered to run me 300 yards on level terms, provided we laid him or his backer £60to £40.
