Running Recollections and How to Train
69 Edinburgh, who ran second in the final. The second day, on which the second round and final arc always decided, was a repetition ofthe first. In my heat in the second round I was drawn with Duncan, of Langholm, 10^,and Frazer, of Sunderland, lh or 8,I forget which. We all got well away, and though 1 caught Frazer, and strained every muscle, nerve, and sinew to overtake Duncan, the latter won by a yard-and-a-half, in12| sec., which made me do yards inside evens—a yard faster than was shown by my running on the first day, and half-a-yard fasterthan I had done in my trial. Duncan wonthe final by two yards from Sharpe, who beat Henderson, of Galashiels, by a yard, andwho in turn was half-a-yard in front of Wilkins, of Eckington (7|). This was the greatest race I ever ran, both as regards time, and the money I should have won had I been successful. There is no use crying over spilt milk, however, as Mr. Gibson said when condoling with me over the fact that my true formhad been shown up to no purpose.
