Running Recollections and How to Train
88 only allowed out on the Tuesday, when I made a feeble attempt to run. On the Wednesday I was a little better, though atrial over400 yards on the Thursday proved that I was anything but myself, and would have little chance with Bredin at his best.- We had learned, however, that that gentlemanhad strained his knee or some other portion of his anatomy, so chances seemed about equal. The race was run on a beautifully sunshiny day, with a gale of wind blowing. Bredin, as usiuffl, won the toss, and chose the inside. Our relative positions made very little difference, however, as I went to the front immediately, and at 120 yards was about ten yards ahead. As Bredin atthis point did not seem to be gaining, I eased up, reserving my strength for the run in, which was against the wind. Bredin began to find some running about200 yards from home, and to make up some leeway. I had gained too great an advantage, however, and won by two or three yards, inthe slowtime of 56secs. I was not a bit proudof this win,as Bredin w T as palpably unfit to run.
