130 DUMB-BELLS AND WEIGHTS has lifted 987lbs (8cwt. gilbs.) clear of the floor; with both hands he has lifted 1897 1 ji lbs. or nearly I7cwt. Finally by using his back* legs, and arms he is said to have lifted off the trestles on which it rested a platform upon which there was nearly 2 tons of live weight (l ton 18 cwt. 44 lbs.). Turning to amateur performances the most noteworthy are those of W. B. C URTIS, American, E. L. L EVEY and W. P RANCE, British, and W. T UERK, Austrian. Apparently any one of these men has been able to take a hundredweight in each hand and raise thetwo hundred weights simultaneously above his head. Undoubtedly the greatest feat of strength ever performed by an amateur was W. B.
