The original trophy was a belt which was won outright by T OM M ORRIS , Jun., in 1870, this being his third win in succession. In 1872 a new trophy was substituted consisting of a champion cup to be held by the leading club of the district in which the winner resided. The feat of winning the championship three times in succession has been accomplished by three players, by T OM M ORRIS , Jun., in 1868, 1869, i 87 O , by J AMIE A NDERSON in 1877, 1878, 1879, and by B OB F ER­ GUSON in 1880, 1881, 1882. J. H. T AYLOR has only just missed this honour as he was champion in 1894 and 1895 and tied for first place in 1896, but lost the championship to H. V ARDON in playing off the tie. 149
