Shaw's time for the true quarter of a mile must have been just under 57 seconds. d The course was meant for quarter of a mile but on remeasurement by three men was found to be 9 yards over this distance. e At Manhattan Field, New York, on 1 Oct. 1892. P. C. Puffer won the hurdles in but half the hurdles were knocked down and there was a strong wind behind the runners. At the same place on 21 Sept. 1895 S. Chase did is'/is. but as he knocked down one of the hurdles the record was not allowed.
