PUTTING THE SHOT AND WEIGHT THROWING I.—PUTTING THE SHOT IN England and America the shot is generally made of iron and spherical in shape; it must be put from the shoulder, with one hand only and without follow, from a 7ft. square or circle. In Ireland, other styles of putting—such as from a stand, or with unlimited run, or with follow—are sometimes practised, but the following tables relate to puts made under the English and American rules, except where it is expressly stated to the contrary. Under these strict rules there is practically only one World's Record, as there is practically only one weight of shot universally used, and that is the 16-lb. shot. The AVorld's Record for putting the 16-lb. shot is held by G. R. GRAY, a Canadian by birth, but an American amateur by residence, with a put of 47 feet made at Chicago, 111., 16 Sept. 1893. D. HORGAN, the Irish Amateur Champion, is not far behind with a put of 46ft. 5 '/ain. At putting the 56-lb. shot, with follow, W. REAL, another Irish champion, holds both the British and American Amateur Records with puts of 23ft. g'/sin. at Limerick, 6 Aug. 1888, and 22ft. Ii'/sin. r »t New York, 20 Oct. 1888. 201
