THROWING WEIGHTS 203 Ireland contests are commonly held at throwing 7-lb,, 14-lb. and 28-lb. weights. These are oblong chunks of iron, without ring or handle, and are thrown from the shoulder with follow. The best authenticated amateur records made with these are held by J. S. MITCHELL, who on 6 August 1888 at Limerick threw the 7-lb, weight 90ft. 2in. and the 14-lb. weight 59ft. 5 8 /4in. The 56-lb. weight commonly used for throwing has a large trian­ gular or circular handle, the total length of the missile over all not exceeding 16 inches.
