British Australia 12 Apr.'88 a Many apocryphal records exist at this distance, but the above are absolutely authentic. In England the 100 yards has never been run inside of 10 sec. Among the sprinting legends still current in America, Mr. W. B. C urtis in his annual review of Amateur Records in the New York Spirit of the Times, instances the following among many others:—" At Baltimore, Maryland, Base-ball Grounds, 9 Aug. 1874. L. L onhy , second, in G'/AS. J F.L audon, third, in g'/ts." Other claims often conceded, but eminently doubtful, are as follows:— E. D onovan (P.) g'liS. at Boston, Mass., U .S.A., 2 Sept. 1895; H. B ethusf . (P.) q '/ ss . at Oakland, California, U .S.A., 22 Feb. 1888, and also at Sioux Falls, U.S .A., 28 Aug. 1888; C. W. W efers , the American Amateur, was credited with 100 yards in g'/js. It is quite possible that W efers is capable of this, but many circumstances connected with this race render the correctness of the time given unlikely. The Committee of the A.A.U. of America have not accepted the record.] 6 G. S eward , British Professional, is commonly credited with 120 yards in n'/ss. at Ealing, on 3 May 1847, but this was in the days ofdouble scratches, and cannot therefore be regarded as trustworthy. In these days a line would be drawn aboutseven yardsbehind
