'63 i On a banked-up track, straightaway, W. B aker ,American Amateur, covered the quarter mile in 47 s /,'?. at Boston, Mass., on 1 July 1886. The record for a grass track appears to be 49',»s. made by the American Amateur L. E. M ybrs at Blackburn, 1 Aug. 1885. j The path was a cinder track one eighth of a milein circuit. This was the first 660 yards, timed independently, of an exhibition half-milerun, with pace-makcrs. It should be noted that as this time was made in a half-mile run, 2 , U*. slower than present world's record (C.H.K ilpatrick's ), it is probable that C.H.K ii.patrick when making world's record for the half-mile, also beat world's record for three furlongs (660 yards); butit is impossible to be sure, as there was no separate timing of this distance on that occasion. A On a grass track L. E. M yrrs ,American Amateur, is creditedwith half-a-mile in im. 56'/ts. at Blackburn, 1 Aug. 1885. / The record for a grass track appears to be 3m. ia*/»s. made by W.
