SHIP RECORDS T ORPEDO boat destroyers have exceeded a rate of 30 knots (or 35 miles) per hour in trial trips, the fastest water travel on record being that attained by the Turbinia (fitted with the new turbine-engines) on her trials in May 1897, when she covered the measured mile in im. 50s., which is at the rate of 32 3 /i knots (or nearly n*]*. miles) per hour. But the real measure of rapid ocean travel is the speed attained by mail steamers between ports. The following records give the fastest times for the sea passage on certain important routes. It may, however, be interesting to give a table showing the mail transit from London to certain places—bests on record.
