TRAIN RECORDS Highest Speed on Record THE highest authentic speed on record for a passenger train is a mile in 39s. or at the rate of 92-3 miles an hour. This record, which is absolutely trustworthy, was madeon a down grade on the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway in the United States between Erie and Buffalo, 24 October 1895. The train consisted of 3 cars weighing about 130 tons. The highest recorded speed in England on down gradients is a mile in 42s. or at the rate of 857 miles an hour, made on both the East Coast and West Coast Routes to Aberdeen in August 1895. World's Record for running on the level would appear to be atthe rate of 76 miles an hour, made between Coupar-Angus and Alyth Junction on the Caledonian Railway in Scotland in August 1896. [4 miles 54 chains in 3m. 41s.] The gradienton the wholeis very slightly up, with only one half-mile even nominally falling. But in any case the deviation from the level may be disregarded. Highest Continuous Speed The following table shows the quickest long distance runs onrecord, station to station, without intermediate stop. 301
