Success in Athletics and how to obtain it

66 SUCCESS IN ATHLETICS hip), the right leg is allowed to drop down on the other side of the bar (sketch 4) and the left leg kicked strongly up and cut down also on the other side of the bar, thus completing the jump (fig. 22). The left shoulder can be kept away from the bar in descending by fling– ing the left arm across the chest on a line with the point of the right shoulder. 2. A ccordz'ng to the Cz'nemato– graph.-After the athlete has taken up the preliminary stand described in (1), and has swung back the arms and bent forward the body, he swings the arms forward and up to the front, at the same time straightening out the legs as he swings, but letting them hang down until the hips are level with the bar, so that his body is as straight as if he were hanging by the han~s from a horizontal bar. As the hips .come above the level of the cross-bar, the arms come down in line with the shoulders, and the knees are drawn up level with the bar; now the seat of the " silks " is higher than the bar, and both ankles in line are level with it. The body is at this stage pressed slightly for– ward, doubtless to contract the abdominal muscles and thus allow the jumper to raise the feet still higher. Now comes the most curious thing of all. The arm nearest the bar (in this case the right arm) is stretched out over the bar, and the take-off leg (left leg in the case assumed) z's allowed to drop back towards the ground as the right leg is lifted across the bar..
