Success in Athletics and how to obtain it

THE POLE-JUMP II5 Balance the pole in the hands with point uptilted, and make a swift smooth run with shoulders as square to the front as possible. Keep the pole still while you are running. Ten feet from the take-off collect all your energies and concentrate your mind on the jump. Throw up the point of the pole and stretch the arms out and up to plant it. As the right hand is above the head, slide the left hand up the pole. Plant t~e point of your pole firmly in the pit, and at the same time see that you get your take– off accurately with the take-off leg well under the body. Swing the legs steadily and strongly upwards as the body rises and begins to turn to the left inwards towards the pole. When the feet are the highest point of the body, begin to pull on the arms. When the left outer ankle-bone is above the bar, turn over face downwards and lift the body still higher by pushing downwards on the pole with the hands, drop the legs, push the pole away, and fling up the arms. The following diagrams, sketches, and calculations should do much to teach the pole-jumper the why and the wherefore of his business. In diagram 17 the pole is shown in the position it assumes at the moment when it is planted in the pit just before taking the jump. The man has been advancing at a high rate of speed in the direction shown by the arrow-head on the left, and he plants the pole in the ground at c, at the same time taking off, or, in other words,
