DISCUS-THROWING out at right angles to the body ready to sweep back and help the body in the reverse (see figs . 55 and 56). To make the throw, the right arm is swept around in a circular movement, the body goes with it, and is reversed from left to right so that the position of the feet is interchanged; the movement is com– menced with a strong drive from the right leg, as the knee is straightened out vigorously, and is ended by sweeping the arm across the body at the level of the shoulders as the right shoulder comes to the front and the body is twisted to the left from the waist upwards. It will be noted that the right arm follows through after the discus has left the hand. (For the technique of follow– ing through see chapter on Hammer-throwing.) The first finger of the Diagram 22. right hand is the last to leave the discus and gives it its direction. Lastly, the thrower must learn to balance after the missile has left the hand, so that, when the throw is made with a turn, he does not commit a foul by coming out of the circle before the .discus has come to earth. · Another point of great importance is the manner in which the discus flies through the air after it has left the hand.
