Success in Athletics and how to obtain it

170 SUCCESS IN ATHLETICS In this position the right leg is perpendicular to the ground, supporting the weight of the body, which is bent back and around to the right, so that the whole left side is turned in the direction of the " put." The right forearm, with the shot in the palm. directly over it, is vertical, and the elbow held close into the body. The left arm is stretched straight out and up, acting as a balancer ; the toes of the left foot just rest on the surface of the ground within the circle (sketch 1), ...... so that the left leg is ready to 0: perform the " kick " as soon as the athlete's balance is assured. ~, Diagram 2 9 . The other party contend that the athlete's body should be held so that the shoulders are pretty well square to the direction of the " put " ; the feet are then as shown in diagram 29. In this case the body is held more upright, as the position of the arms is different. The left arm is held straight out from the body and practically parallel with the ground; the right, with shot in hand, is held somewhat as pre– viously described (for the exact position of the arms, see fig. 73). But, to anticipate matters a little, just as the spring forward is to be made, the elbow is raised outwards instead of being kept directly under the shot, so that as the athlete springs forward, the hand in which the shot is held rests on the shoulder just to the side of the neck. It will have been obvious in the first case that the leg must have been lifted with the outer ankle-bone
