Success in Athletics and how to obtain it
I ;, THROWING THE JAVELIN zor the waist, down over the javelin; the side-step carries him with the left foot six feet behind the throwing– board. He now twists his shoulders to the right, brings the throwing arm back to its fullest extent, and at the same moment places the right foot in behind the body, which is now over the javelin, and instantly makes the throw, the force of which carries him up to the throwing-board (see diagram 39) after the reverse. The whole effectiveness of this method lies in the side-step, which allows the body to be swung .round and back without any break or pause in the move– ment ; it also enables the arm to be brought right back with great ease, and gets the body low for the throw, so that the power comes from below upwards. The arm action is rather like that of a boy throwing a flat stone to make it skim along the surface of a pond, when playing " ducks and drakes." The reader is requested to study the diagram carefully, as it is of the most vital importance, if he is to undertake ~he method just described.
