Success in Athletics and how to obtain it

~30 SUCCESS IN ATHLETICS When it has been decided to hold an athletic sports meeting, the first thing to be done is to make up the programme; this must be of such a nature as will provide a variety of sport for the spectators. The following programme is suggested as a basis to work from: 100 yards. 220 yards. 440 or 88o yards. 1 mile or 4 miles. High-jump, long-jump, hop, step, and jump, or pol~- JUmp. 120, 220, or 400 yards hurdle-race. Throwing the hammer, discus, or javelin. Putting the shot or slinging the 56-pound weight. Steeple-chase or standing high or long-jump. This may be added to by including extra scratch events; but in any case the list should include two sprints, two distance races, two field events, and one hurdle-race. Directly the programme has been decided upon, the meeting should be advertised in the sporting papers and local press, and by means of carefully worded posters. Club secretaries and individual athletes should be circularised for the purpose of obtaining entries. All advertisements should give a full list of the events which make up the programme. It should be noted that in making up the pro– gramme, preference should be given to those events which will obtain local entries, as these are always a draw to the public.
