CHAPTER Ill THE QUARTER-MILE IN the quarter-mile race a vast amount of endurance and stamina is required, therefore the athlete in training must pay particular attention to acquiring these qualities. It is most necessary that the lower limbs should be well built up and fully developed; the reader's attention is therefore directed to the exercises given in the Appendix to this volume, which have been specially designed for the purpose. In running such races as the roo and z~o yards, tactics do not enter into the matter at all; it is simply a case of " go as hard as you can from the crack of the pistol and devil take the hindmost." In the 440 yards this is not so, for much depends on knowing tbe capabilities of your opponents and watching their positions throughout the race, by which your own tactics must be governed. The method of starting in this race is exactly similar to that prescribed for the shorter distances, and the same remarks hold good concerning•getting into the running-i.e. not bringing the body up into the true running position too suddenly.
