14 THE "100-UP" EXERCISE scratch race between six representatives of \Vorcester and Hereford. George rode an old-time 56 inch high wheel machine, and the race was wheeled on a track made by the members of the Worcester Cycle Club with their own hands, George himself helping in laying the track of five laps to the mile without banking. Two days later George ran at Widnes, and took the land 1-mile scratch races; also the 2-mile handicap from scratch, ,making good times in all three races. Several sprints and the 440 yards handicap fell to his lot during the year, and he was capable of running the 100 yards in about a yard under 11 seconds, the quarter in 51 seconds, the mile in 4 minutes 20 econd , and 10 miles in considerably under 52 minutes, and the -e and other such-like performances he could put up almost any day in the ·week. On one occasion, for instance. he won a sprint handicap, a SO-guinea 600 yards challenge cup level race, and a 10-mile handicap from scratch on the same day at Birmingham; while at Lewes he competed in every event on the card, winning prizes in the sprint, hurdles, quarter and mile, and taking first place in the teeplecha e and high jump. On another occa ion, at Marlow, he won the 440-yard , ran second in the mile and took the steeplecha e, all from scratch in very fast time . But perhaps the mo t wonderful record of thi · very remarkable athlete was that which he accom– plished one afternoon at the A ton Lower Ground , Birmingham, in 1884, when in the annual match betw en Ioseley and Blackheath Harriers, he won the ~-mile, the mile, and the 4-miles, and the 2-miles teeplechase, having as competitors in all four events
