34 THE ATHLETE. accidents as usual; still several did contriveto get into thewater and mud, and one or two ensured their doing so, by taking the widest leaps " standing," but they were none the worst for it. On the 12th, the 1 STCLASS QUARTERMILK was run ona goodtrack in 61secs.; the 2Nn,3 RD , and 4 TH CLASS 300 YARDS in 40, 44$, and 46isecs.,the best times yet recorded; they were all well contested. The times for the 100 YARDS on poor turf (5 classes) were12^,13,14,14i and 15i seconds; very close races. The H URDLB RACES were watched with much interest; F. Maxwell, the favourite for the 1st class, stumbled over one,and fell over the next hurdle. The jumping of the 3rd class was remarkably good. For the VISITORS' STAKES , Mr. Rawlins beat some good runners in fine style, in 128ecs. ; and in the OLD BOTS' HURDLE RACES , Chellingworth took the lead and kept it. Temple, after clearing the last hurdle, did not run in, and so lost the second prize. VAULTING: F. Maxwell, for whom it was regarded as a certainty, was several inches lower than hecan do; so H. Brooks wonwith 5ft; and Barlow the second class with 4ft 9in. HIGH POLE— 1st Class : Grayson, 7ft Sin; Second; Powys, 7ft; Third: H. Taylor, 6ft 2in. WIDE JUMP—R. Godby, 15ft lOin; Hunter, 14ft 7in; F, Street, 12ft 4in; and Walmisley, lift llin, were the several winners. HIGH JUMP —Down cleared 4ft 5m in beautiful style; Hunter, with 4ft 2in; Compton, 3ft 9in; and G. Taylor, with 3ft 4in, won in the other classes. In THROWINGAT WICKET , all but Large were very feeble. In THROWINGCRICKETBALL, H. Annesley's firsthrow of 89yds 1ft; Picker ing's of 60yds ; and Collier's of 56yds 1ft were the winning ones.
