THE ATHLETE. AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB. Champion Meeting. ON Monday, April 15, the ,cond An– nual Champion M eting of the Amateur Athletic Club was helJ. on the ruuning– grounds of Beaufort Hou e, ,v albam Green, the sc ne of the Champion Meet– ing of last year, and the OxforJ. and CambriJge Athletic Sports. This ground bas been, for the year pa t, under the management of the A. A. 0., and is open for practice to all active members of the Club. Un<ler the superintendence of ::i\lr. harohers, the indefatigable S.3- crerory, the ground bas been consider– ably altered and improved, and, though still far from perfect, is undoubtedly the be t running-ground in London. The band of the ~ outh Middlesex Rifle Vo– lunteers playc<l with great spirit, during the afternoon, an excellent sel ction of dance and other mu ic. The follow– ing is an account of the ev rnl event , the first of which wa run a little before half-past twelve o'clock:- 100 yards Flat Race- The course for this race l1ad been di– vided into five bcparate divisions, by means of light iron btakes and ropes about a yard from the ground, to secure a straight course to each competitor, and avoid the chance of a " cros ," which so frequently occurs in this kind of race. HEAT 1. J. H. Ridley (Eton) . . . . 1 0. G. Emery (L. A. O.) . . . 2 Emery had rather the best of the start; but the Eton man just pa sed him, an<l. won only by a few iuches, HEAT 2. W. Collett (L.A. 0.) . . . . l J. omervell (St. John's, Oxf.) . ~ Somervell wa off fin,t, but was soou caught, and Collett, running very strong, won easily by 2 yds. HEAT 3. W. M:'Laren (M. A. C.) . . . t R. W. Vitlal ( t. John's, Oxf.) . t W. 0. Clifford (48th Regt. ) . . O This was a very good race all the way. Clifford seemed to come in lame. FINAL IIEAT. J. H. Ridley. 1 W. Collett 2 R. W. Vidal . 3 W. M'Laren . 4 Collett bad the best of it for 50 y<ls., but at that point Ridley came up level with him, and, nmning with a splernlid stride, ran right away from bis adver– sary, and won by more than a :·"rel. Vidal came up at the end, and finiJ,l'tl clo ·e to Collett. Time, 10! sec. 120 yards Hurdle Race; 10 flights, 3 ft. 6 in.- HEAT 1. J. Law (Jesus, Camb.) . . A. llillyard (Pembroke, O:ij.) ~ E.
