TIIE ATHLETE. 25 pelting rain. l\IicklP.ficld had the lead at the end of the first lap, followed by Roycl , Long, Green, ancl Kennedy. In the fourth lap Royds and Long raced desperately together, and Green retired, l\1icklefiel<l. falling into third place. Long had a hort lead of Royds in the fifth lap ; Kennedy pas~e<l Micklefiel<l, and purted gamely after the leading two, who were racing together aml alter– natt~ly showing in front. TlJis went on until the run in of the last lap, every one thinking that the fini ,h lay between Royd and Long. but all this time Ken– nedy was rapidly overhauling them, and with a grand rush at the Pavilion, landed himself fir t by 2 yds.
