The Athletes and Athletic Sports of Scotland

I 12 ATHLETIC SPORTS OF SCOTLAND. athlete who has any claim to be ranked with these three is Charles M'Hardy, an Aberdeenshire athlete s ttled inAustralia. The only thing wehave to go by in a public competition lately is his throwof 107 ft. 3^ in., with a 16 lb. hammer, at Goulburn in January, 1890, against D. Dinnie and D. C. Ross. The handle wasaid to be bad, but seeing that D. Dinnie, who was out of practice and in bad form besides, andmore than fifteen feet behind his best formwhen he arrived in Australia, was only a little more thansix feet behind, M'Hardy has nothing to show that entitleshim to claim the title of champion Scottish athlete at hammer-throwing. Coming to putting, Owen Duffy, although an Irish athlete, has been so long resident inScotland that he is almost always classed with Scottish athletes, and has won oftener at putting than any other athlete in Scotland since Dinnie left. He isstill in the front rank along with M'Rae, G. Johnston has beat Duffy onceand M'Rae several times dur ing the season of1890; and George M. Ross, the first famous Scottish athlete settled in America, who has come to Scotland to compete against the home athletes, has beat Duffy once, and been wellto the front all along, while Theodore Campbell was only 2-| in. behind M'Rae at Inverness. Against these C. M'Hardy is again the onlyScottish athlete who canput forward a claim to rank along with them at the present time. At Goul burn hisput witha 28 lb. stone,Scotch style, was 30 ft. 6 in., and D. Dinnie says he can put a 22 lb. stone from35 to 36 ft., and a16 lb. stone from 42 to 43 ft. His chance of a third prize is therefore a very doubtful one against the best home athletes. The 56 lb. weight is a more difficultsubject. G. M. Ross iswilling to back himself to do 28 ft., standing style. At Goulburn M'Hardy threw the 56lb. weight 25 ft. f in., and D. C. Ross 24 ft. 2 in., Ross complaining that M'Hardy followed a yard over the mark. In addition to G. M. Ross, George Davidson, K. M'Rae, and G. Johnston could all beat the Australian performances. K. M'Rae is the championat tossing the caber, with Donald M'Donald and G. Davidson well up, and
