The Modern Method of Training for Running, Walking, Rowing & Boxing
u PEDESTEIANISM. to fully dcvelopeliis particular forto as a pedes trian. To sum up in a few words, training is a complete system of diet and exercise duly- carriedout and strenuously adhered to. Look at thefatigue undergonebythe North American Indians, as well as most of the savage tribes, beforethe marcli of civilization into their ter ritories. What feats of strength, agility, pedes- triankn, etc.,withmarvelloussagacity, they dis played, until at length, coming into contact with Europeans, and partaking of their vices, they becameenervated, and lost most of their previous attributes, and in consequence of their excesses, from a nation of warriors they became a bye- word, and degenerated into a nation of half- breds and slaves, and are fast passingfrom the face of the globe. The consequence, therefore, is, that fromthe mode of lifewhich almost all lead, the health becomes impaired, and the only remedy will be discovered by him who follows the principlesof training in someformor other, the more simple the better. That the same systemof training willsuit all constitutions,it wouldbe absurd folly to advance; or that the sameamount of work and strictness of diet is requisitefor a man about to run a race of one hundred and twenty yards, as for a struggle of an hour's duration, would be equally pre- posterous. Nevertheless, the groundwork of training arises from the benefits derived from regular diet and steady exercise. The author's experienceis teeming with encountersin which he has in some instances suffered defeat by IKTRODTJCTION. IS menmuch inferior in physical capabilities (in handicaps, etc.) from want of condition. The same men, on more than one occasion, have made matches for large stakes: whenthe author, taught by dire experience, had gone, through the proper ordealof training, he landedhimself an easywinner, to thesurprise ofhis antagonists and then-backers. In a fewwords, training will bring out all the hitherto latent powers of the athlete, raising the man whohas previously been consideredalmosta nonentity into publicnotice, the one of mediocrecalibre into the first ranlc, and thoroughlydevelopethe excellencies, etc., of the first-class proficientto an extent that will not only surprise himself, but his associates and long-triedfriends and bacbcrs.
