The Parish of Llanwynno (extracts)
CHAPTER IX "How are you today?" "How are you? "How's the fair?" "Slow, very slow, again." David Rhys, from Llwynperdid, and David of Ynyshir, the two old Davids, are the speakers; they have seen many fairs and caused an uproar in quite a few. There [at the Ynysybwl Fair2], the two of them told the stories of Guto Nythbran that they remembered so well, for their fathers had run with him in the mountains; and through their mothers and fathers their memories went back to the year 1737. They were old, thin men, who wore long great coats almost down to the floor, with large buttons as big as five-shilling pieces from neck to foot. The coats appeared to be very heavy, but David of Ynyshir boasted that he once beat a champion at the Waun Fair3 in a jumping competition, while still wearing it.
