Bromilow led for the first quarter right into the straight, where Braun, on the inside, beat both Holding and Bromilow, and won by nearly two yards. Time, I min. 58 sec. Heat 8.-I. F. Time, r min. 52t sec. 2 3 4 5 6 0 0 Fairbairn-Crawford made the pace so hot in this remarkable race that be was fifteen yards ahead in the first 200, and was clone with in the first lap. 'heppard then led with Lunghi and Ju t close behind him. Just tired first. Lunghi hunted the leader all th way home, but was out– paced. 'heppard won by about nine yards in the splendid time of 1.52j, completing the Half-mile (5] yards further) in 1.54. This beat by 3~ seconds the Olympic record for 800 metres of 1.56, made by Lightbody at St. Louis in 1904, and was within } second of tbe world's record (amateur) of r .535 for the Half-mile s t up by C. H. Kilpatrick at New York in eptembcr, 1895. His time for the Half-mile, r.54, was also a British record, the previous hesl being 1.54], hy F. J. V. Cross ( . . .C.). Lunghi's time in this race was r min. 541 sec., which also beats tbe previous lympic record. The pace may be imagined from the facts that the fir:t 400 metres were done in 53 seconds, and the quarter in 535 seconds. Braun only just beat Bodor for the third place.
